Albemarle Pippin - Apple Varieties list a - z  Albemarle Pippin

Description This old time or "antique" apple variety was an important commercial variety in the early 1900s. The fruit is greenish-yellow, medium to large with excellent fruit quality. Albemarle Pippin matures in early October and will keep in cold storage for six months.

Description A very late maturing Winesap-type variety grown primarily in the Southeast. The fruit is dark red and very firm with a tart flavor. This is a great variety to add in a cider blend, providing a high acid, spicy flavor.

Description The first late season Gala selection to be introduced. Autumn Gala was selected from a limb sport of Kidd's D-8 Gala by Harry Black at his Catoctin Mountain Orchard, Thurmont, MD. This is truly a late season Gala maturing four weeks after other Galas are harvested. Fruit is typical Gala quality, very firm, with color slightly improved as compared to Kidd's D-8 cultivar. Autumn Gala provides the opportunity to extend the Gala harvest to late September and early October.

Arlet, also known as Swiss Gourmet, is an attractive mid-season apple. It is primarily an apple for eating fresh, but can be used for cooking as well. It has a mild flavor, essentially sweet but with some acidity.

One of the best early-season apples, Akane is a marrage between the American Jonathan apple and the English Worcester Pearmain. In appearance it most closely resembles the Worcester Pearmain.
