Not uncommon under conifers in northern coastal California. Also sometimes found in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Edibility
Deadly poisonous!!! Symptoms include nausea and vomiting beginning 2-12 hours after ingestion and progresses to kidney failure in 2-6 days.
Comments
Amanita smithiana could be confused with other members of Amanita section Lepidella: Amanita cokeri, Amanita magniverrucata, or Amanita silvicola. Older speciemens could also be confused, with disasterous results, with the edible Tricholoma magnivelare.
