Tess of the d'Urbervilles Climbing
|
This variety makes a superb and striking sight when grown as a climber.
It bears large fragrant flowers of bright crimson coloring. They are of a nice, deeply cupped shape in the early stages; the petals turning back to give a less formal, more domed flower. They bend over with their weight, to give an elegant effect.
The growth is robust and bushy with large, dark green leaves.
There is a good old rose fragrance.
This rose is excellent for cutting and displaying in the home.
Named after the character from Thomas Hardy’s novel.

The Generous Gardener Climbing
|
A rose of delicate charm - its flowers being beautifully formed; their color a soft glowing pink at the center, shading to palest pink on the outer petals. When the petals open they expose numerous stamens, providing an almost water lily-like effect.
It has strong, elegantly arching growth with polished dark green foliage.
This rose would produce a wonderful effect towards the back of the border. It will also make an excellent climber. Like ‘Mortimer Sackler’, it is highly disease-resistant.
There is a strong and delicious fragrance with aspects of Old Rose, musk and myrrh.
The Generous Gardener has been named to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the National Gardens Scheme which has, over the years, contributed so much to charity and made it possible for us to see so many beautiful gardens.

The Pilgrim Climbing
|
This is one of the most beautiful English Climbing Roses, producing nicely-shaped medium-large flowers. Each bud opens to reveal many petals, which form a shallowly-cupped rosette, eventually opening out quite flat. The colour is a very attractive, soft but pure shade of yellow, the petals paling slightly towards the edges. The flowers are produced freely, repeating well.
The Pilgrim has a fine fragrance which is a perfect balance of tea and myrrh. The plentiful green foliage compliments the flowers perfectly.
Up to 8 ft.
The Pilgrim may be grown as an excellent shrub which will remain quite short, sending up just the occasional long shoot. These should be cut back to help retain a nicely-proportioned shrub shape. |

Tuscany Superb
|
Perhaps a sport of Tuscany, to which it is very similar but less bushy and a little taller. The flowers are larger with more petals, and the stamens are less conspicuous. Deep crimson, fading to purple. 5 ft. X 3 ft. |

(Old Velvet Moss). Dark crimson, quickly fading to a pleasing violet-grey. A tall robust rose; at its best at the back of the border, mingling well with other shrubs. Plenty of moss. Rich perfume. The best of the mosses. 6 ft. x 6 ft. |

Yellow Babe
|
This mid yellow rose is a mutation of the very popular orange spray rose ‘Babe’ having all the same characteristics of good flower clusters and form, nice long thornless stems and clean semi glossy foliage. A welcome addition to the range. |

Young Lycidas
|
This is a variety of classic Old Rose beauty. The flowers are quite large and deeply cupped even when fully open; the many petals arranged in a charming, rather informal way. Their colour is new to English Roses; a blend of very deep magenta, pink and red – the outer petals tending towards light purple – although this is in contrast to the outside of the petals, which are quite silvery in appearance.
The flowers nod gracefully and are produced singly or in small groups on vigorous stems. Its growth will build up to form an attractive, bushy shrub of perhaps 1.2m/4ft tall by 90cm/3ft across.
There is a delicious fragrance that changes markedly with the age of the flower; starting as a pure Tea scent and changing to a blend of Tea and Old Rose, with intriguing hints of cedar wood.
‘Young Lycidas’ would be an excellent choice to associate with English Roses and Old Roses in a rose border or in a mixed border with hardy plants.
We were asked by The Friends of Milton's Cottage to name this rose to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of the poet John Milton. ‘Lycidas’, one of the finest short poems in the English language. Interestingly, it was Milton who introduced the word ‘fragrance’ into the English language.

(Bourbon) Although the individual flowers are not particularly fine in themselves, this is one of the best and most reliable of all climbers. Great quantities of fragrant, deep rose-pink flowers are produced with exceptional continuity. It is particularly happy on a north wall and may be grown as a shrub or for hedges. 12 ft. |
