Toy Fox Terrier

Toy Fox Terrier Temperament

The Toy Fox Terrier are small packages with more playfulness than one would assume coming out of such a small creature. Full of life and very playful, they can be great hunters and still remain a suitable house pet. If they are given a fenced in yard to roam in all day long, they can literally invest hours of their time during the day peaking around through the grass. They are very affectionate and adore playing games with their owners on a daily basis. They can be a child's best friend, but do ensure the child knows how to properly handle the small animal as they can turn on the child if they are mistreated in any way. They are not very fond of strangers inside their homes and may take some time to engage with them. A smart and peppy dog, the Fox Terrier is sweet and makes an exceptional watchdog all in one adorable package.

Toy Fox Terrier Upkeep

If you can purchase a few toys for the Toy Fox Terrier to entertain themselves with all day long, then you can easily adapt to their high level of energy. Most smaller canines are rather playful as it is in their nature and this breed is no exception. They will tend to bark or even begin a digging session if they are left unattended for a long period of time with little or no mental stimulation. Being a lapdog, they do enjoy cuddling and will need extra care when the temperatures become much cooler. If taking your Toy Fox Terrier outside to play or for a walk in the winter months, you must ensure they will be warm enough by wrapping them in a sweater or ear coverings as their tolerance for colder climates is not good. They need to reside indoors at all times and not on a farm or outdoor living arrangement. Their fur coats are extremely easy to care for with a simply weekly brushing.

The average lifespan of a Toy Fox Terrier is from thirteen to fourteen years long. Generally they reach an adult weight of four to seven pounds.

Toy Fox Terrier History

The history of the Toy Fox Terrier begins with the Smooth Terrier as they were a farmer's favorite type of smaller breed for their rodent hunting capabilities to help around the farming grounds. They smaller, toy breeds were an instant hit starting with the Toy Manchester Terrier and the Chihuahua as well. The toy versions of the Smooth Terrier were just like the larger ones, but with an even more advanced personality. They were much more aggressive in nature and still small enough to use as great lapdog. Getting their own nod from the UKC in 1936 and going on to become quite the little show dogs for years to come.
