Sorraia horses are rather unique creatures. They are moderate in size but can function very highly and for long time periods. Utilized for harness work and riding purposes, these animals are very resourceful and can depend on themselves for most of the day. Described as hardy, tough ,and very brave animals by experts, their DNA has been found inside the famous American Mustang breeds. There are many studies being completed to test the posing theories that the Sorraia breeds have derived from various Iberian breeds.

Sorraia horses have a very kind temperament. They are also extremely wise creatures. The Sorraia breed is simple to train as they have the ability to learn a lot very easily. Just as some smaller children are willing to please their parents, these horses are equally as willing to please their trainers and family members.

Sorraia Appearance

The Sorraia horse stands around fourteen hands at adult size. They bode a convex shaped head with a low set tail and a long back. They have a distinct mane with what appears to be a striped or highlighted look of their hair, making them an easy breed to pick out. They are considered a very beautiful horse with what appear to be many Arab qualities.

Caring for the Sorraia breed is usually rather simple. They are one of the very few breeds that have the ability to survive in various temperatures. They also can have the ability to continue living on extremely minimal supplies. Historically, they have survived in very sparse conditions and travel all over the mountains and through wet conditions alike.

Sorraia History

The Sorraia horse breed comes from Portugal, as well as Spain. They received their unique name from where they where originally bred. There are two rivers called the Raia and the Sor that travel between Spain and Portugal. They were initially utilized for herding bulls all over Iberia. They are commonly mistaken for the Przewalski’s horse or the Tarpan breed as they do look similar. You can spot these fine creatures all along the Iberian Peninsula. Many experts have taken into account that these Sorraia horses could be responsible for many other horse breeds, even some bred in North Africa. They are currently undergoing a preservation project. They can be found in Libson as well as all along the Atlantic coast of Portugal. There were two variations of the Sorraia horses that were taken to North America sometime in the twenty first century with one directed to Canada. They were bred there as well and were referred to as the American Sorraia.
