Meadow Brown
Special features: The male (top) is slightly smaller than the female, and dark brown all over. The male has one black 'eye' spot on each forewing. The female has large orange patches and an eye spot on each forewing.
The adult butterflies only live for around 5 to 12 days and usually mate within the first couple of days of their lives. The eggs are laid within 4 days.

Size: Wingspan approximately 50mms.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: June to October
Habitat: Meadows and woodland edges.
Food: Nectar.
