Oahu Amakihi

Overview

Oahu Amakihi: Small honeycreeper with yellow-green upperparts. Yellow throat, breast, and belly, becomes dull towards flanks and vent. Face has black lores. Gray bill is decurved. Legs and feet are gray. One of the least specialized and most adaptable Hawaiian species.

Range and Habitat

Oahu Amakihi: Endemic to Oahu. Found in wet, high elevation forests and drier habitats in the the Wai'anae Range. Frequents both native forest and lower elevation forest consisting of introduced plant species.

INTERESTING FACTS

A group of honeycreepers are collectively known as a "hive" of honeycreepers.
Despite living on the most populated Hawaiian island and being locally common, it has been lightly studied and its habits are not well known.
The Hawaiian name Amakihi is derived from the word kihi or kihikihi, meaning curved.
They were once considered a subspecies of the Common Amakihi but are endemic to Oahu and are now considered a full species.
